If you operate a business that caters to your local community, more and more of your future, potential clients will be using the web, and local search specifically, to find your company. The search engines have focused on their local search directories recently to make sure that searchers looking for businesses in their area can easily find them. The time of big Yellow Pages is passing, Local Search is growing, and you need to make sure that the search engines know that you run a business catering to local clients.

When we are adding websites of our clients to the local search engine directories, we use a list of local web directories that we have compiled over the past couple of years. Recently, we were able to toss out that list of web sites as we found a great web page that has a constantly updated listing of the local directories every local business needs to get their web site submitted to so that potential clients can find them.

A Few Points about Submitting Your Web Site Local Search Directories

  • The link is not an automated tool and you must go to each web site individually to enter your information. It takes a little bit of time but is well worth it in the visitors that it brings you.
  • Some of the directories already have your company in their database from other sources so don’t be surprised if you already see your listing.
  • We have seen listing mistakes many times when companies were already listed from automated sources. And these were big mistakes like having words switched in the company name and the wrong phone number or address. These sites give you the chance to update the listing with the correct information. How would you feel if there was a wrong number in your Yellow Page ad.
  • Even if you don’t cater directly to local customers, you may still get some potential customers. Even though we focus on a national client base, we get several visitors each day who find us in a local search.
  • We’ve seen the listings take a couple of months to show up in the directories so be patient if your website doesn’t show up right away.
  • Make sure you add your information in all the different categories on the web page listed above. I know it’s a lot but the benefits to getting new links to your site are huge!
