I think this could be filed under “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” but it’s probably something more along the lines of everyone goes where the money is.  AOL has just announced that they are offering a local search feature.  Either way, the big online marketing players making a move into online search is a recurring theme.  Yahoo and MSN followed Google’s lead and Google has even made their local search more prominent recently.

The important thing to note is that if you haven’t taken advantage of the free listing services that these major players offer, you’re missing out on a valuable source of qualified traffic to your web site.
