Give Thanks by Referring a Friend
November 27th, 2006 by Jim
Ok, this is probably a bit of a stretch but Thanksgiving really did make me think of this (sort of). I was actually reading an article from a web development company that was talking about how they created a program to insert a “Send to a Friend” feature in the websites that they build. They thought it was a great program and sold it over and over again to their future clients.
That might not seem so exciting to companies not in the web development world but if you take a slightly different angle, you’ll see what I mean. The reason this company is reselling this “Send to a Friend” feature is not because they are bloating up their design fees but because it really worked for their clients. New customers are the ones who are most excited about the purchase that just made and the best source to spread the marketing message to other people that they know. I found a company online that is using a similar feature.

This form is displayed on a website after visitors sign up for a newsletter. It has increased sign-ups by 13% because people are forwarding the invitation to their friends.
My point is that you need to give your customers/visitors an opportunity to forward on information about your product/service to their friends. This could be a form after they purchase your product or sign up for a newsletter. It could be a link on your website that they can click on to inform different people about what you have to offer. Viral marketing is nothing that can be artificially created but just make sure that you give your clients the opportunity to spread the message if they want to.
It’s their way of giving thanks for the quality service that you offer. I know, it’s a bit of a stretch but there is a slight Thanksigiving them there.
